The Village Matrons (Photo by Dana Davis) Dimensions: 6 in. wide, 38 in. tall 22 in. wide, 36 in. tall (Sold) These two totems represent the women of our community, their creative and nurturing qualities. The taller totem houses an African copper plated, carved wood fetish statue. The statue can come out of its unit, turned, and be placed back in the totem with a full frontal view. Or as seen in the photo above, it can be placed sideways within, and its double image can perhaps suggest two sides of each of us, twins... The piece is covered in African mud cloth and embellished with shells, also representing productivity. The freestanding totem in front houses an African meat container. It is made from cowhide, basket weaving, and pitch, and has been waxed. The totem is covered in mud cloth, and incldues Balinese carved hands and horsehair. |
